Who is Dmitry Blagorodov?

Dmitry is a concept artist who has experience working in the film and games industry. His original focus was on characters, but curiosity led him to the creation of creatures and entire locations with their own stories.

“What aspect of your art do you want people to remember you for?”

“First of all, I believe that an artist needs to have his own recognizable style. Having experience of past work and seeing other people’s work, it’s cool to try to create something new.”

“What’s one specific memory you never want to forget?”

“I will never forget how, as a young child, I watched the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” animated series and first “Star Wars” trilogy. I think that’s when I realized that I wanted to create concepts for such projects. Although my path to this was more tortuous and long.”

“What does the process of coming up with new ideas look like for you?”

“Ideas for new jobs often come suddenly. It so happens that, starting with the design of the creature, you are carried on and in the end you realize that you have made a whole series of full-fledged, plot pictures where this creature no longer plays such an important role.

I am inspired by films, music, observations on the street and a work of other guys, as well as famous artists. It is an endless stream of information processing.”

“Before you start a project, what feelings or thoughts are going through your head?”

“At the beginning, if I don’t have solid ideas, the first thing i do is collect references. Like everyone else I use Google search and Pinterest, I do some kind of brainstorming. This greatly simplify my work in the future, giving me a lot of tips and directios.”

“Do you have any advice on breaking out of your artistic comfort zone?”

“About 3 years ago, I thought that my calling was characters. The most interesting thing is that curiosity and dislike of monotony led me to the creation of creatures, and then entire locations with key frames. I absolutely agree that all our successes come only through overcoming. It is important to have genuine interest and be an inquisitive person.”

“If you could give your younger self any art advice, what would it be?”

“For aspiring artists and for the beginner myself, I would advise just to be patient and do what you like, overcoming negative criticism and shrugging friends. If you are really interested, your eyes are burning and your hands are doing – one day you will be successful. Don’t give up!”
